Calonge
Calonge is one of the most beautiful medieval villages in the Baix Empordà — a castle fully integrated into the village, vaulted alleyways and a lively Catalan village life. Four kilometres from the coast, but a world apart from tourism.
More about Calonge
Calonge lies around four kilometres from the coast, on the slopes above the Baix Empordà, and has a character that has remained virtually unchanged through the centuries. The medieval castle does not stand outside the village but inside it — fully integrated into the buildings around the Plaça Major. The vaulted street Carrer del Càcul, the church of Sant Martí and the narrow stone alleyways breathe history. Calonge has also been designated the first "book village of Catalonia" (Poble de Llibres) — a cultural ambition that fits perfectly with the character of this village.
Daily life is well organised for a village of this size. There are supermarkets, a baker, a greengrocer, schools and basic medical care. The town hall manages both Calonge and Sant Antoni de Calonge, so the coast is also administratively close. Palamós is 5 minutes away, Platja d'Aro 10 minutes. Girona Airport is around 35 minutes away.
Nature & surroundings
Calonge lies on the edge of the Parc Natural de les Gavarres — an extensive woodland area stretching to Girona. The combination of nature, vineyards and proximity to the coast makes the location exceptional.
- Parc Natural de les Gavarres — directly behind the village, with extensive walking and MTB routes through oak and pine forests.
- Conca del Tinar — Calonge's vineyard area, with DO Empordà wines and local bodegas.
- Castle of Calonge — medieval fortress from the eighth century, with gardens and walls accessible all year round. Venue for festivals and markets.
- Sant Antoni de Calonge — the coastal settlement of the municipality, 4 km away, with beaches and the Camí de Ronda.
Living & neighbourhoods
Calonge offers a varied property offering — from authentic village homes in the historic centre to spacious villas in the surrounding urbanisations with sea views.
- Historic centre — stone village houses and smaller apartments in the medieval core. Unique character, limited supply. Popular with those who want to live fully local.
- Vizcondado de Cabanyes — one of the most prestigious urbanisations on the Costa Brava, with spacious villas, privacy and sea views. High prices, limited supply.
- Rio d'Oro — villa district with panoramic views over sea and valley. Public urbanisation, easily accessible.
- Mas Pere / Finca Verd / Mas Pallí — green, quiet urbanisations between the village and the coast. Ideal for families seeking space.
- Mas Ambrós — small-scale villa district close to nature, popular with permanent residents.
Practical
Calonge combines the best of two worlds — authentic Catalan village life with the coast within cycling distance and excellent urbanisations for those seeking space and privacy.

- ✅ Excellent urbanisations with sea views and privacy
- ✅ Nature directly behind the village (Gavarres)
- ✅ Coast (Sant Antoni) 4 km away
- ✅ Good accessibility (Girona airport 35 min, Barcelona 1h15)
